22日、英国経済が第3四半期に堅調な成長を遂げることを示唆する、予想を上回る総合購買担当者景気指数（PMI）速報値を受けてポンドは急騰した。８月の総合PMIは７月の52.8から４カ月ぶり高水準の53.4に上昇し、予想の52.9を上回った。サービス業PMIは53.3と、前月の52.5から上昇し、予想の52.8を上回った。

調査によると、8月のサービス業の成長率も4ヵ月ぶりのピークに達し、製造業の生産高はこの26ヵ月で最も速いペースで増加した。全体として、企業活動は予想外に力強く、サービス業の力強い回復がそれまでの製造業の大幅な落ち込みを帳消しとなった。 

このような経済の明るい兆しは、インフレ圧力が緩和されている今、通常であればイングランド銀行（BOE）による追加利下げへの道を開くものである。しかし、好調な経済状況から、BOEは追加利下げを行うべきかどうかを決定するため、より慎重なアプローチを取ることができる。BOEは11月までに経済見通しを公表するため、11月は追加利下げを決定するのに理想的な時期である。
