ブレント原油は、2.4％の急騰を見せた前日から上昇に転じ、8日、1％高の1バレル＝79.16米ドルで取引を終えた。この反発は、景気後退に陥るとの懸念を払拭する好結果となった米雇用統計など、多くの材料が要因となっている。7月28日〜8月3日の週間の新規失業保険申請件数が23万3000件で、前週比で1万7000件減少したことは、労働市場のファンダメンタルズが引き続き堅調であることを示唆している。 

地政学的な緊張も原油市場を過熱させている。最近、ハマス最高指導者とヒズボラの最高幹部がテヘランで暗殺された後、イランがイスラエルに報復行動を起こす可能性があり、原油価格は上昇の勢いを増している。イスラエルはこれまで戦争の激化に備えており、木曜日にはハマス過激派との戦闘を再開し、ガザ地区での作戦を拡大した。投資家は、これが中東の産油地域全体に広がり、最終的に世界の主要なサプライチェーンに影響を及ぼすことを懸念している。他にも、リビア国内最大の油田が操業停止に陥り、ウクライナの対ロシア反撃で油田に対してある程度の被害が出た。
